Individualizing and optimizing the use of early warning scores in acute medical care for deteriorating hospitalized patients.

AIM While early warning scores (EWS) have the potential to identify physiological deterioration in an acute care setting, the implementation of EWS in clinical practice has yet to be fully realized. The primary aim of this study is to identify optimal patient-centered rapid response team (RRT) activation rules using electronic medical records (EMR)-derived Markovian models. METHODS The settin...

Internet of Things Enabled In-Home Health Monitoring System Using Early Warning Score

Early warning score (EWS) is an approach to detect the deterioration of a patient. It is based on a fact that there are several changes in the physiological parameters prior a clinical deterioration of a patient. Currently, EWS procedure is mostly used for in-hospital clinical cases and is performed in a manual paper-based fashion. In this paper, we propose an automated EWS health monitoring sy...

Performance of Early Warning Scoring Systems to Detect Patient Deterioration in the Emergency Department

Acute hospital wards in the UK are required to use Early Warning Scoring (EWS) systems to monitor patients’ vital-signs. These are often paper-based, and involve the use of heuristics to score the vital signs which are measured every 2-4 hours by nursing staff. If these scores exceed pre-defined thresholds, the patient is deemed to be at risk of deterioration. In this paper we compare the perfo...

Early warning score: An indicator of adverse outcomes in postoperative patients on a gynecologic oncology service.

OBJECTIVE In 2014, our hospital implemented an early warning score (EWS) to identify inpatients at risk for clinical deterioration. EWS≥8 is associated with ≥10% mortality in medical admissions. Since postoperative hemodynamic changes may alter EWS, we evaluated EWS in post-laparotomy patients. METHODS Gynecologic oncology patients admitted for laparotomy from 9/1/2014 to 7/31/2015 were categ...

Early Deterioration Warning for Hospitalized Patients by Mining Clinical Data

Data mining on medical data has great potential to improve the treatment quality of hospitals and increase the survival rate of patients. Every year, 4--17%of patients undergo cardiopulmonary or respiratory arrest while in hospitals. Early prediction techniques have become an apparent need in many clinical areas. Clinical study has found early detection and intervention to be essential for prev...
